American Water Spaniel History
Developed in the 19th century in the Midwest United States—particularly in Wisconsin and Minnesota—the American Water Spaniel was designed to work from small boats and navigate cold wetlands. It was bred from a mix of Irish Water Spaniels, Curly-Coated Retrievers, and possibly the extinct English Water Spaniel.
It gained popularity among hunters for its versatility: retrieving game from both land and water while remaining small enough to ride in canoes. Despite its abilities, the breed has remained relatively unknown outside of hunting circles. It was officially recognised by the AKC in 1940.

American Water Spaniel Temperament
These spaniels are lively, intelligent, and deeply loyal to their families. They are known for their affectionate nature and desire to work alongside their owners. They can be reserved with strangers but rarely aggressive.
They respond well to positive reinforcement and structured training but may show some stubbornness if under-stimulated. They enjoy swimming, tracking, and games that engage both their mind and instincts.
Note: This breed needs daily purpose-driven activity and does best with owners who involve them in both physical and mental tasks.
Health and wellness
The American Water Spaniel has a dense, water-resistant coat that needs regular brushing to prevent mats and maintain skin health. While overall hardy, the breed has a few known genetic conditions and benefits from routine veterinary screening.
Regular exercise and access to safe swimming areas contribute significantly to their well-being.
Significant problems:
Hip dysplasia
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
Allergies (environmental or food-related)
Hypothyroidism
Ear infections (due to floppy ears and water exposure)
