Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan Malamute is a powerful Arctic sled dog known for its strength, endurance, and pack loyalty. With a thick double coat and wolf-like appearance, this ancient working breed thrives in cold climates and active homes.

Alaskan Malamute History

One of the oldest Arctic sled dogs, the Alaskan Malamute was developed by the native Mahlemut people of Alaska for hauling heavy loads across long distances. Unlike racing breeds, the Malamute was bred for power and endurance rather than speed.

It played vital roles during the Alaskan Gold Rush and Arctic expeditions. Recognised by the AKC in 1935, the breed remains iconic for its working abilities and majestic presence.

Alaskan Malamute Temperament

Friendly, dignified, and loyal, the Malamute bonds strongly with its family and enjoys pack life. It’s typically affectionate with humans but independent in nature—sometimes stubborn and strong-willed.

Malamutes are usually good with children but may have difficulty with same-sex dogs or small animals due to a high prey drive. They are not ideal watchdogs due to their sociable nature.

Note: They require firm, consistent leadership and a secure environment—they’re expert escape artists.

Health and wellness

Alaskan Malamutes need high levels of daily physical activity—pulling, hiking, backpacking, or sled work are ideal. Without an outlet, they may become destructive or vocal.

Their dense coat needs weekly brushing and more frequent grooming during seasonal shedding. They are prone to overheating in warm climates.
