Akita

The Akita is a powerful, large-boned working dog known for its dignity, courage, and strong protective instincts. With a plush double coat and a calm, confident expression, the Akita embodies quiet strength and unwavering loyalty.

Akita History

The Akita originates from the mountainous regions of northern Japan, specifically the Akita Prefecture. Bred initially for hunting large game such as bear, boar, and deer, the Akita developed into a symbol of strength and protection. In Japan, Akitas are associated with good health and long life and are often given as gifts to honour significant life events.

Helen Keller famously brought the first Akita to the United States in 1937. The breed split into two types after World War II: the Japanese Akita Inu (more fox-like in appearance) and the American Akita (larger, more robust). The AKC recognised the breed in 1972.

Akita Temperament

Akitas are intelligent, independent, and deeply loyal to their family. They tend to be aloof with strangers and often intolerant of other animals, especially dogs of the same sex. This breed is not typically vocal, but it is alert and observant—often acting as a silent guardian.

Early socialisation and consistent leadership are critical. Akitas are best suited for experienced owners who can provide firm boundaries and respectful guidance. They enjoy calm routines and tend to form strong, singular bonds.

Note: Akitas should not be left unsupervised with unfamiliar dogs or children. They thrive in stable, respectful environments.

Health and wellness

Akitas require daily moderate exercise and benefit from structured mental stimulation, though they’re not as hyperactive as some working breeds. Long walks and short play sessions suffice if they’re mentally fulfilled.

Their thick double coat sheds seasonally and needs regular brushing, especially during “blow out” periods.

Significant problems:

Hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)

Autoimmune disorders (e.g. VKH, hypothyroidism)

Gastric torsion (bloat)

Life expectancy: 10–13 years
