Reassessing AKC Breed Behavior Descriptions

Research Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, December 31, 2025Zapata & Zapata (2024) conducted a dimensional and hierarchical analysis of American Kennel Club breed standards to evaluate how behavioral traits are described and structured across breeds.

This study examined the behavioral trait descriptions published by the American Kennel Club (AKC), the largest and most influential dog breed registry in the United States. While AKC breed standards are widely consulted by breeders, owners, and professionals, the behavioral components of these standards have rarely been subjected to systematic scientific analysis.

The authors compiled eleven behavioral traits from official AKC breed standards covering 286 recognized breeds. In addition to behavior, dog size and appearance variables were included to contextualize breed profiles. The dataset was analyzed using pairwise correlations, factor analysis, and hierarchical clustering to uncover latent trait structures and similarities among breeds.

The dimensional analysis revealed three major behavioral constructs that consistently emerged across breeds. These constructs were labeled Social Engagement, Pet Demands, and Vigilance. Each dimension captures behavior patterns highly relevant to everyday dog ownership, including sociability, caregiving demands, and environmental monitoring or watchfulness.

However, the results also showed that many breeds exhibit behavioral trait profiles that do not align with the narrative descriptions provided in their official standards. Hierarchical clustering by breed group further suggested that certain crucial behavioral factors may be underrepresented or omitted in standard descriptions, despite being important for predicting real-world behavior.

The authors note that while AKC data reflect some well-established canine behavioral correlations, the lack of standardized observation protocols limits their precision. Breed standards often rely on historical or descriptive language rather than empirically validated behavioral measurements.

Overall, the study emphasizes the need for standardized, data-driven approaches when quantifying breed behavior. By identifying strengths and weaknesses in AKC behavioral descriptions, the findings provide a clearer framework for interpreting breed tendencies and for improving communication between breeders, professionals, and prospective dog owners.
