New Canine Frustration Questionnaire Provides Reliable Measure of Frustration in Dogs

Published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, this study by K. McPeake, L. Collins, H. Zulch, and D. Mills establishes the Canine Frustration Questionnaire (CFQ), the first reliable psychometric instrument designed to quantify frustration in dogs. Frustration, defined as the negative emotional reaction that arises when expectations are violated, is a key factor in many behavioral problems, yet until now lacked a structured measurement tool.

The researchers created an online owner questionnaire consisting of demographic questions, behavioral history, and 33 frustration-related items rated on a 5-point Likert scale. Over a 5-month dissemination period, 2,348 dog owners completed the survey. To evaluate reliability, 273 owners retook the questionnaire after six weeks, 276 owners retook it after one year, and 92 paired responses were collected from two caregivers rating the same dog independently.

Using principal component analysis with Varimax rotation, the authors assessed item structure. Twenty-two items showed sufficient reliability for inclusion, and 21 items loaded onto a five-component solution that represented biologically meaningful aspects of canine frustration. These components aligned with owners’ broader perceptions of their dogs’ frustration tendencies and correlated with expected behavioral markers.

The CFQ demonstrated strong intra-rater and inter-rater reliability, providing evidence that owners can consistently report frustration-related behaviors. This reinforces the instrument’s value for both clinical and research contexts, where understanding frustration is crucial for assessing problems such as aggression, reactivity, and difficulty coping with delayed rewards or blocked access.

The authors note that further validation—including behavioral testing and physiological measures—is underway, but the CFQ already stands as a foundational tool for quantifying frustration as an affective trait in dogs. Its development fills a significant gap in canine behavioral science and offers a structured approach to improving diagnosis, intervention, and welfare outcomes.
