The Other End of the Leash: An Experimental Test to Analyze How Owners Interact with Their Pet Dogs

Research Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, November 20, 2025Cimarelli et al. (2017) presented the first standardized experimental test designed to objectively analyze how owners interact with their pet dogs, offering new ways to understand the human side of the dog–owner relationship.

Published in the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), this study introduced a structured, reproducible protocol for observing owner interaction styles under controlled conditions. Recognizing that differences in human caregiving behaviors profoundly influence bonding, obedience, and stress coping in dogs, the authors sought to move beyond self-report methods toward objective behavioral analysis.

The experiment consisted of eight standardized situations encompassing both positive and mildly stressful contexts. Owners were asked to engage in activities such as playing, teaching new tasks, guiding food search preferences, and greeting after separation. They also faced more challenging interactions—physically restricting their dog during DNA sampling, dressing the dog in a T-shirt, and issuing basic commands during distraction. Each situation was coded to capture dimensions like encouragement, control, warmth, and patience.

This methodology revealed substantial individual variation in owner behavior, supporting the idea that humans possess distinct “interaction profiles” similar to parenting styles in developmental psychology. These styles were found to correlate with differences in dogs’ emotional regulation, social engagement, and learning responses. The study established a foundation for linking human interpersonal tendencies with animal welfare and training efficacy.

Cimarelli and colleagues emphasized that such standardized observation can deepen understanding of how owner behavior shapes the dog’s cognitive and emotional world. The paradigm offers valuable tools for future research into dog–human relationship quality, stress resilience, and attachment—transforming everyday interactions into measurable scientific data.
