Yuni Astuti and colleagues (2024) investigated the connection between dog ownership and women’s physical and mental health in a qualitative study published in Retos. Using semi-structured interviews with 20 women, the researchers explored how living with dogs shapes daily life and well-being.
Most participants reported that their dogs offered emotional support, companionship, and motivation, contributing to decreased stress and anxiety. Many also described an uplift in mood and increased opportunities for social bonding through dog-related interactions.
However, the study also acknowledged the challenges of dog ownership. These included financial costs, time commitments, allergies, and the emotional strain of illness or loss. Some women noted that while their dogs were a source of joy, the responsibilities could also increase pressure in their daily routines.
The findings suggest that while dog ownership positively influences mental health, the balance of benefits and burdens depends on individual circumstances. The authors emphasize the importance of supporting the human–canine relationship to maximize its benefits for overall well-being.
