Noise Sensitivity Threatens Dog Welfare

Research Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, September 11, 2025 – Research published in the International Journal of Bio-Resource and Stress Management reveals that one-third of dogs suffer from noise aversion, with sudden loud sounds such as fireworks and thunderstorms being the most frequent triggers of stress and phobic responses.

R. Raghy, N. Jacob, and J. Tamizhkumaran (2023) provide a detailed review of how noise impacts the welfare of domestic dogs. The study highlights that canine ears, designed to detect a wide range of sound frequencies, are vulnerable to damage and stress when exposed to excessively loud noises. Sudden bursts such as thunder, gunshots, and fireworks are the most common causes of noise-induced fear in dogs.

According to the review, about one-third of the canine population experiences noise sensitivity. Reactions range from mild fear behaviors like panting, pacing, and hiding, to extreme phobic responses including panic, acute agitation, and destructive actions. Such responses can develop after repeated frightening exposures or even a single traumatic event. Older dogs, in particular, are more prone to developing strong negative emotional responses to loud noises.

The review also notes that breed differences play a role, with some breeds showing greater resilience to noise stress. Beyond behavioral consequences, noise sensitivity is associated with long-term welfare issues, including chronic stress and anxiety-related disorders. Interventions such as the use of music therapy, desensitization, and environmental management are explored as strategies for noise abatement and stress reduction.

Ultimately, the authors emphasize that understanding canine responses to sound is essential for protecting welfare and preventing the development of anxiety-related conditions. This review provides veterinarians, behaviorists, and dog owners with critical knowledge to design supportive environments for dogs vulnerable to noise aversion.
