Service Dogs and PTSD Rehabilitation: Lessons from Denmark

Research Study Chiang Mai, Thailand, September 6, 2025 – A 2017 case study published in Animals examined how service dogs are integrated into PTSD rehabilitation in Denmark, revealing both strong emotional benefits and critical gaps in collaboration between healthcare providers, service dog organizations, and social services.

Chalotte Glintborg and T. Hansen (2017) analyzed the case of a PTSD patient in Denmark to explore how service dogs are incorporated into mental health rehabilitation. While the presence of a dog provided clear emotional support, significant structural and organizational challenges were identified.

Key Findings:

  • Emotional support: The service dog was perceived as a strong source of comfort, reducing anxiety and depression symptoms and improving overall quality of life.
  • Lack of integration: There was minimal communication between social services, healthcare providers, psychological therapists, and service dog organizations, leading to fragmented care.
  • Barriers to access: The patient experienced limited access to public services with the dog and difficulty incorporating the dog into structured rehabilitation goals.
  • Stigma: Wearing a vest labeled “mentally ill” caused negative social perceptions, highlighting the unintended consequences of visibility.

Implications: While the case demonstrates that service dogs can meaningfully support PTSD recovery, the authors stress the need for better coordination among public administration, rehabilitation services, and service dog providers. Without integration, there is a risk of conflicting approaches with evidence-based psychological treatments or inadvertently worsening patient outcomes.

Conclusion: The Danish case study illustrates both the therapeutic potential of service dogs in PTSD rehabilitation and the importance of systemic support structures. Effective integration could ensure service dogs enhance rather than conflict with ongoing treatments, making them a valuable component of comprehensive PTSD care.
